East
Syracuse, New
York maintains an unassuming atmosphere despite its close
proximity to the Greater Syracuse
metro area. East Syracuse, located within the Town of De
Witt, reported a population of 3,178
in the 2000 Census.
A suburb of the Greater
Syracuse
area, De Witt is comprised of the communities of East Syracuse and Jamesville
that formed during the industrial revolution. In the early 1800's, the
opening of the Erie
Canal, followed by railroad construction through East Syracuse,
caused a major growth surge in De Witt as people passed through Onondaga
County on their way west. Employment was primarily based on
agriculture and harvesting the area's natural resources, such as limestone
from the Jamesville quarries. As these employees began to make homes
for themselves, they also built various shops and taverns for the
community and those who passed through it. De Witt experienced amazing
residential growth at the close of both world wars and peaked in 1970
with 29,000 residents.
Today, De
Witt is the eastern hub of Central NY, with a steady resident
population of just over 24,000
and 43,000 workday residents. It is home to various manufacturing
